Why do French Bulldogs cost so much?

original.png

I have written and re written this page in my head 100 times.

What can I say? Basically, a well bred French Bulldog cost a lot to make.

They cost even more to make if you are a breeder in California.

Starting in 2018 they will cost us even more due to higher costs and new laws on medicine that we can no longer buy in California.

The average puppy to make for me in 2016 was $2400

UPDATE 1-1-2021 average pup cost to make went up to $2800 this is based on a litter of four, if we have a litter of one well??

These are real numbers. I've kept all my records of money spend and losses in 2017. It was tough to see how much I spend in order to raise these amazing dogs that I love. I don't include my time or the sacrifices that my family makes.

I love our breed and they do cost a lot to make and keep. I wish I could get the cost lower so that more families could afford to be owned by on of my French bulldogs. I'm going to lay it all out to help families understand how much it costs to make a well bred frog dog. I'm not counting my time, heartache, headache, tears, laughter, zombie mode, endless emails, pictures, paperwork, vet visits, puppy visits, shows, prep (I could go on ) but just out of pocket expenses.

There are several different categorizes of costs: bitch, stud, litter & business.

BITCH EXPENSE

cost between $6770 to $12270 now this works most of the time. I've also had girls that never had a litter and than everything I spent is absorbed. I have several green sheets that ran in the red indefinitely over the years. You never know whats going to happen, infertility, death ??

THE STUD

You either buy a boy or buy semen.

Stud fee: a set price or a pup back. Although buying semen is much cheaper you have no guarantee of the health or genetics of said stud. I prefer owning my boys so I know exactly what I'm using.

Stud fee $500-$3600

Owning stud dog same start up cost as with a bitch.

Stud 1st yr (not old enough to breed same a bitch) $4,865

2nd yr

Kibble $110

Check his semen $100

Vitamins $240

Register $35

DNA $50

Health test $95

THERE ARE OTHER COSTS. DOGS SHOWS, UNEXPECTED VET VISITS

BUSINESS COSTS

BILLIONS AND BILLIONS AND BILLIONS. NO JUST KIDDING BUT A WHOLE LOT AND I'LL ADD THOSE SOON.
